Grammy-winning producer Giles Martin, son of Beatles legend Sir George Martin, has joined a growing backlash against Labour’s controversial AI proposals that would allow tech firms to use music, films, and art to train AI—without paying creators.
Martin, who used AI to “reunite” The Beatles for Now And Then, called the plan “nonsensical”, arguing artists shouldn’t have to opt out to protect their work. Sir Elton John and Simon Cowell also back the campaign, warning the move could devastate the UK’s creative industry.
The government rejected amendments to the Data Bill that would have forced AI firms to disclose if they used copyrighted material. Critics say the rules favor Big Tech over artists.
“It’s like The Little Mermaid—you should own your own voice,” Martin said. Should AI have free access to creative work?
